OUR WINES: MORE THAN QUALITY

Since the foundation of the Peter Mertes winery in 1924 we have been a family enterprise committed to wines of select quality and regional character.
We know that the basis for a good wine is already laid by the work in the vineyard. In co-operation with regional associations such as the 'Blaue Band' at the Mosel or internationally with Fair Trade, we support sustainable wine-growing. Thus we make a contribution to the future security of viticulture.

What is the Blaue Band association for Mosel Riesling?

The Blaue Band is an initiative for Mosel Riesling which was founded in 2002 by 68 winegrower families in the Middle Mosel, and has since become an exemplary model on the Mosel and the Rhine.
The aim is to produce typical Mosel wines of high quality from the grape varieties Riesling and Müller-Thurgau, and for Peter Mertes to acquire the wine the growers make at pre-agreed fair prices. In contrast to publicly subsidised co-operatives, all members of the Blaue Band are independent winegrowers who develop their own grapes into young wines in close co-operation with our œnologists and cellar masters, ready to deliver to Peter Mertes.
This fosters healthy competition - particularly among the young winegrowers - to produce better results year after year, and it protects the long-term economic livelihood of the winegrower families.
