Peter Mertes family wineries are committed to preserving centuries-old vineyards
The family of company founder Peter Mertes has been growing wine since the 18th century - a tradition that has been cultivated without interruption for generations. Even today, it is a matter close to our hearts to promote the beautiful Moselle wine-growing region and maintain it in its splendour.
The company cultivates numerous vineyards in renowned locations along the Middle Moselle, including wine villages such as Brauneberg, Lieser, Graach and Wehlen as well as the town of Bernkastel-Kues. Since 1987, a closed terroir of more than 10 hectares has existed near Trier, which is consistently cultivated according to the guidelines of organic viticulture. The family wineries have also been active for decades in traditional wine-growing villages on the Saar and Ruwer such as Ockfen and Sommerau.
The company's vineyards are united under Peter Mertes Familienweingüter KG. It includes both traditional vineyard sites and historically significant wineries that are managed independently.
One focus is on the takeover of wineries without successors. Peter Mertes Familienweingüter KG makes targeted investments in modern technology and positions the wineries on the market with an eye to the future. The aim is to preserve the centuries-old vineyards of the local wine-growing region. In total, the estates cultivate around 120 hectares of vineyards on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer. The portfolio includes outstanding sites such as Bernkasteler Doctor, Ockfener Bockstein and Wehlener Sonnenuhr.
One of the most important wineries owned by the family wineries is the Witwe Dr H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef winery. With its historic Doctor cellar, which is located directly beneath the famous Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard, it is one of the company's most valuable jewels.
